The major attractions:
Toy Train: The miniature train of Darjeeling is given
heritage status by UNESCO in recent past. A visit to Darjeeling
is incomplete without a ride in the toy-train. Its run by
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. It runs between New Jalpaiguri
station and Darjeeling.
Tiger Hill: Tour of Darjeeling is incomplete with out
seeing sunrise from from Tiger Hill (2590m). The exotic beauty
of the hill is indescribable till seen. The brightening
Kanchenjangha and the rising Sun from behind the hills are
farmable picturesque.
Darjeeling Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) & Museum
: Adjacent to the Darjeeling Zoo, is the Mountaineering
Institute and Museums (Everest museum & Natural History Museum).
Entrance is brightened with a statue of the grate sherpa Tenjing
Norgay in his climbing mode. HMI runs courses on mountaineering.
It has a mountaineering museum with every mountaineering gears.
It has a grate collection of the specimens of Himalayan flora &
fauna. The Everest Museum at Darjeeling HMI exhibits the history
of attempts on the great peak. The museum also exhibits
equipments used by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary on their
way to Mt. Everest. A letter written by George Mallory, the
British climber who was lost while climbing Mt. Everest and
whose body was found just a few years back also exhibited.
Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park: The Zoo and HMI
is in the same complex. The zoo houses a wide collection of
high-altitude birds and animals, India's only collection of
Siberian tigers and some rare species of red panda, snow leopard
and many other animal and bird species. The Darjeeling zoo is
famous for its success in the snow leopard breeding program.
Lloyd Botanical Garden: The botanical garden, located
below the Darjeeling bus stand, is worth visiting. Unique
collection of himalayan plants, flowers and orchids will charm
everybody. The hilly garden environment and landscape with
silence of nature will surely pull back the feet of tourist to
go out.
Ghoom Monastery: Known as Yiga-choling, the ghoom
monastery is famous for image of Maitrey Buddha (the coming
Buddha). On the way to tiger hill the same can be seen.
The other places of interest in the city are:
Thupten Sangag Choling(Dali),
Batasia Loop, a unique railway engineering works to lift
the train route in loop way.
Chowrasta (The Mall), a wide promenade atop a ridge lined
with shops and restaurants; Mall Road, starting and finishing at
Chowrasta, for a leisurely stroll amidst peaceful surroundings
and splendid views.
Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Center, a major center for the
production of Tibetan carpets, woodwork and leather goods.
